72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown Winner!
And the winner is... Robjn Taylor with "Arbitrarily Pear". The first return winner at the Festival. Kudos to all the filmmakers for an incredible showing of films. Check out the Second Cuts screening, Wednesday, for the finalists, and all the films shot over the first 72 hours of the Fest

This years 72 HOUR was absolutely FIXED!!! I've attended the Festival for the past 3 years and have to say there is SOMETHING really fishy with Robyn Taylor winning again. IN NO NO NO WAY was this the best film this year. There were 2 that were standouts and the one with the special effects (i believe called Red Revenge if I recall correctly) should have definitely taken it this year!!! I would like the FESTIVAL judges to hang there heads in shame. Just to prove. Have both films up on the web and see who people like the most. TERRIBLE exibition this year by the Judges!!!!

I too was at the Gala yesterday. And have to agree with the first post. I don't believe Robyn Taylor should have won. Too be really honest and no disrespect to Robyn, but myself and my friends don't think it should have placed top 8.
My favorites were both the sandman and red revenge.
Maybe new judges are needed?? Something to think about??

wow you guys are angry. I'm sorry your films didn't make it to the finals and your sole reaction to this harrowing fact is vast judgment - But to pose conspiratorial theories is just plain childish. Constructive criticism is a far better vehicle for discussion than rampant hatred. All the films were great, one of them one. Eat a fudgsicle and calm down piper.

first let me just get this out of the way: Red Revenge fucking sucked. Special effects were good, everything else blowed.
Robjn's film was by far the most professionally shot, using smooth camera motions etc. you can definitely tell it was planned out very carefully. His films are completely original, well composed, and over all fun to watch. and that is the point here.
i was also very impressed with Sandman, and Liz's film, which I can't remember the name of right now, with all the sketches over top.
The competition is judged on creativity, technical aspects, and over all impression. If it's fun to watch, and stands above the rest, it should win. just like all of robjn's movies.
Arbitrarily Pear totally deserved to win. It was my favorite video, and I was stoked to see it win. My second favorite was the 24-style one. I also really liked the mustard video that aired on second cuts night. There were a couple from the second cuts that I thought could have easily been in the top 10 but otherwise I think the judging seemed fine.
Robyn Taylor's 'Arbitrarily Pear' made absolutely NO sense whatsoever!!! It WAS terrible. He IS NOT A FUNNY guy. He tries SO hard to be this cocky, funny filmmaker, but comes across as really conceited. Big deal he used a good camera from his win a couple of years ago 'a WELL deserved win i must say'. BUT this year they got it completely, completely wrong.
I would have given it to SANDMAN myself!!! RED REVENGE was cool with the GRINDHOUSE style, but i don't think that had enough umph to win. The MUSTARD vid was good also, my pals are on the same boat as you there.
Well fingers crossed for the right winner next year.

Its pretty obvious the same Mr 'i hate robyns films' anonymous has posted all the negative comments here. For one, you can't spell Robjn's name right. You've given that away in each posting.
Are you a sore loser from the Sandman crew? Sure Sandman was cool, but Red Revenge was by no way quality film making. The judges aren't idiots. Grow up kid.

I understand that people have different opinions about films.
But if you want your opinion to be respected, you should show some respect as well.
Childish insults will not prove your point. at least leave a name or some reasoning behind why the movie sucked.
As a part of Robjn's crew, I saw how much thought and planning went into his film. We worked for hours on three second shots. Every shot is professionally lit with with well planned camera movements. We didnt need any special effects to get our point across.
some films had good content but were shot poorly.
Others had AMAZING special effects for a 72 hour festival, but had no plot points, just the same thing the entire way through.

Robjn's (Spelt with a J, not a Y) was so far ahead of everyone else, it should have been in its own category. It killed everything before and after it. Excellent camera angles, perfect lighting, a clever plot with meaning (you two dimensional characters just wouldn't get it), humor (Alpacas anyone?) and plain style.
Most people I talked to, thought that 4 was next best and Sandman was after, or vice versa.
4 was great, although the camera angles/lighting wasn't as effective and the story was clever but wasn't as good as Robjn's.
Sandman was weird but had excellent lighting and awesome special effects.
Red's Revenge was a Planet Terror Grindhouse wannabe, that I admit was cool, but only after the first 2 beheadings.
I went to both the Gala and second cuts and except for the "I had no camera, or any ideas, so I shot some stuff and spent my time in photoshop, and added a Whistler kids rule comment" movie (Gala event), judging was spot on! Same for the Pro Photographer Showdown.
Like a couple of others have said, you are jealous you didn't win and thus you are ARBITRARILY HATING ROBJN and his movie. Your the ones he is paying out in his movie. Which I find hilarious, since you are just proving his point. Soooo pucker up, and get the f#@$ over it. He won! And good on him. Plus he has $6,000, a timeslot before The Hills Finale (talk about showcase) and a whole ton of other goodies not to give a s*?# about what you "filmmakers" have to say.
Do you need a judge to give you an award for biggest drop kick?

This, among several other constructive reasons, is why Robjns movie stood out among the rest. If you spoke to the judges after the event - like I did, you would understand more realistically why his movie was picked

My film didn't make the finals but that doesn't make me so bitter that I don't realize a great film when I see it. Robjn Taylor's film rocked. So did Sandman but his was tighter and flowed better than anyone else's out there. Sure there was some amazing special effects in other films but Mr. Taylor's film was the whole package. And just because someone won before doesn't mean they should be excluded from winning again. Talent is talent and the very qualified judges from the Vaqncouver Film Biz could see that. Art is subjective and just because things don't always turn out the way you like..doesn't mean you need to get a hate on. Learn from it...take away those lessons and build out in for the next time around. You shouldn't be making films to win...you should be making films because you love making films!

I was in the film Red Revenge, and have to say we are just ecstatic to even have made the top films of the festival. We just went out and did the best we could in the time frame, and had a fun time doing it. None of us thought (based on the violent content) that it would win, but we are very happy with a ton of support and feedback we received. We thank you all. Our overall feeling was that it was either Arbitrarily Pear or Sandman. So we tip are hats to you all and can't wait for next year.
For those that didn't like ours, c'est la vie. We appreciate all the constructive feedback though.
